Additional information

Marcian came to power through one of Late Antiquity's more opportunistic arrangements: he was a relatively obscure Thracian soldier elevated by the powerful general Aspar, who married him to Pulcheria — Theodosius II's sister — within days of Theodosius's death from a riding accident in 450. The arrangement suited Aspar, who as an Alan of barbarian origin was himself ineligible for the throne. Thessalonica's mint was one of the empire's secondary gold-striking facilities, and solidi from that officina carry the distinctive mintmark THSOB or its variants, distinguishing them from the more prolific Constantinople output.
