Magnus Maximus seized power in Britain in 383 by having his troops proclaim him Augustus, then immediately crossed to Gaul and drove the legitimate western emperor Gratian to his death at Lugdunum. Trier served as his primary imperial mint precisely because it was the administrative capital of the western prefecture — striking solidi there was a deliberate assertion of territorial control, not mere logistics.
His regime collapsed in 388 when Theodosius I invaded from the east. The five-year window constrains the entire issue tightly, and coins from Trier's mint under Maximus are generally better executed than his later Milan and Aquileia output.
