Obverse description Frontal bust of the emperor Justinian II, crowned and draped, rendered in the highly stylized Beneventan manner characteristic of Lombard coinage. The effigy displays a bearded face with large schematic eyes, surmounted by a jewelled crown with pendilia, the hair falling in banded locks to either side of the face. In the left field, a patriarchal cross on a short staff is held by the emperor, while the right hand holds a globus cruciger partially visible at lower right. The legend, divided across both fields, reads D N - IVN PP, enclosed within a beaded border.
