Libius Severus was a puppet in the most literal sense — elevated to the western throne in 461 entirely at the direction of the generalissimo Ricimer, who had just murdered his predecessor Majorian. Eastern emperor Leo I refused to recognize Severus at all for the duration of his reign, leaving the west diplomatically isolated and territorially hemorrhaging. Whether Severus died naturally in 465 or was quietly removed by Ricimer remains an open question among historians.
Ravenna output for this type is notably scarcer than Milan, reflecting the administrative disorder of these years.
