Additional information

Julius Nepos is the answer to a question most people never think to ask: who was the last legitimate Western Roman emperor? Romulus Augustulus, the name everyone knows, was never recognized by Constantinople — Nepos, ruling from Dalmatia after his 475 expulsion from Ravenna, retained imperial legitimacy in eastern eyes until his murder in 480. These solidi were struck during that strange interregnum, when Nepos held the title without the territory, issuing coinage for an empire he governed in name from across the Adriatic.
