Julian II issued this solidus during his brief reign as sole Augustus — a reign defined almost entirely by his doomed Persian campaign of 363 AD. After crossing the Euphrates with some 65,000 troops, Julian was mortally wounded during the retreat from Ctesiphon, dying before his army reached safety. The campaign collapsed so completely that his successor Jovian was forced to cede five Roman provinces and the strategic fortress of Nisibis to Shapur II in exchange for safe passage — one of the more humiliating treaties in late imperial history.
RIC VIII 324 is a Rome mint issue, struck during a narrow window of roughly two years.
