Julian II struck this solidus at Antioch during his preparation for the disastrous Persian campaign of 363 — the expedition that ended with his death from a javelin wound outside Samarra, the last pagan emperor of Rome dead in the field before his army could retreat. The Antioch mint was the logical production center for a military payroll issue of this type, positioned directly on the eastern supply corridor.
Julian's reign lasted just twenty months. The mint output at Antioch was necessarily compressed into that window, making coins attributable to his rule there relatively finite in number.
