Jovian's reign lasted barely eight months — long enough only to negotiate a humiliating peace with Shapur II that surrendered Nisibis and fifteen other Mesopotamian fortresses Rome had held for decades. The treaty, concluded in desperate circumstances following Julian's death on campaign, provoked outrage in the Roman senate and among the army. Solidi struck at Nicomedia represent the entire monetary output of his reign from that mint, making the series collectively thin in number.
Jovian died at Dadastana in February 364, likely from charcoal fumes while sleeping, before ever reaching Constantinople.
