Jovian's reign lasted just eight months — long enough to negotiate a humiliating peace with Shapur II that surrendered Nisibis and fifteen other fortresses to Sasanian Persia, undoing decades of Roman strategic positioning in the east. The treaty was so unpopular that ancient sources record soldiers weeping as they evacuated Nisibis, a city that had never fallen in three Persian sieges. Jovian died in February 364 at Dadastana, cause uncertain, before reaching Constantinople.
The Antioch mint was the closest major facility to these events, making its solidi from this reign direct products of that political catastrophe.
