By the 460s, the Visigothic kingdom under Euric was effectively autonomous from Roman authority, yet continued striking solidi in the name of reigning western emperors — partly as diplomatic cover, partly to maintain the coin's acceptance in trade networks that still ran on imperial credibility. Valentinian III had been dead since 455, making these attributions a deliberate fiction.
