The Visigoths struck gold solidi in the name of reigning Western emperors as a deliberate act of political accommodation — acknowledging nominal Roman authority while operating as an autonomous power within former imperial territory. This issue, produced during Theoderic I's reign and the years immediately following his death at the Catalaunian Plains in 451, reflects the careful diplomatic balancing act the Visigoths maintained with Ravenna throughout the mid-fifth century. Toulouse, the Visigothic capital, was the almost certain production site.
The fabric tends to be slightly broader and flatter than contemporary imperial strikes from Ravenna.
