| Reverse description | Central field dominated by a large cross potent on steps, a motif derived from the Byzantine reverse type of the period, rendered in bold relief with a cross-crosslet form atop a three-stepped base. The letter G, denoting the issuing Lombard duke Gregory of Benevento, appears to the left of the cross shaft. The surrounding legend incorporates the mint mark CONOB at lower right, indicating the nominal standard of the Constantinople solidus. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border and reflects the Beneventan imitative tradition of Byzantine gold coinage. |
