| Obverse description | Frontal facing bust of Emperor Leo III, rendered in the debased Lombard provincial style, depicted with a diademed head adorned with pendilia falling to either side. The emperor is shown with a stylized mustache and large almond-shaped eyes, wearing a chlamys fastened at the shoulder, with a small cross-on-globus held in the left hand visible at lower left. The portrait, while clearly derived from Byzantine imperial iconography, displays the characteristically schematic and flat artistry of the Beneventan mint. The surrounding circular legend reads D N LEO P P AVG. |
