Obverse description Right-facing bust of the Emperor Gratian rendered in high relief, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed, with elaborately styled hair adorned with rows of pearls characteristic of late Roman imperial portraiture. The paludamentum is fastened at the right shoulder with a fibula, and the cuirass is visible at the chest. The circumferential legend D N GRATIANVS P F AVG runs clockwise around the field, identifying the emperor as dominus noster. The portrait conveys imperial authority in the refined Theodosian artistic style.
