At his feet prostrate two suppliants in attitudes of submission, while behind the emperor sits a captive, symbolizing conquered peoples. The composition encapsulates the imperial ideology of universal Roman dominion. The mint mark and officina letter appear in the exergue, identifying this issue as a product of the third officina at Nicomedia (SMNΓ). |
