Struck at Nicomedia in the immediate aftermath of Constantine I's defeat of Licinius at the Battle of Chrysopolis in September 324, this solidus belongs to a brief celebratory series elevating Constantine II within the dynastic hierarchy. The PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS title was a deliberate archaism, borrowed from early imperial practice to signal legitimacy through Roman tradition at a moment when Constantine was consolidating sole rule over a reunified empire. Nicomedia had been Licinius's capital; striking dynastic gold there so quickly was a pointed act of political absorption.
