Constantine's use of VIRTVS AVGVSTI — imperial virtue or martial valor — on this Ticinum solidus was deliberate propaganda following his victory over Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge in 312. Ticinum (modern Pavia) was one of his preferred western mints precisely because of its proximity to the Alpine passes and northern military theaters. The mint had previously served Maximian and was absorbed into Constantine's operation as he consolidated control over Italy.
RIC VII Ticinum 35 is a scarce issue within the series, the mint's gold output in this period being modest compared to Siscia or Thessalonica.
