Arichis II issued this solidus in the years immediately following Charlemagne's destruction of the Lombard kingdom in 774 — a political rupture that left Benevento as the last functioning Lombard principality in Italy. Rather than submit, Arichis repositioned himself as an independent sovereign, adopting the title of princeps in 774 and deliberately distancing Benevento from its former subordination to Pavia. The electrum composition, debased from the Byzantine gold standard, reflects both the principality's strained resources and its careful navigation between Frankish pressure from the north and Byzantine influence from the south.
