Solidus - Arcadius VICTORIA AVGGG, Mediolanum

Mediolanum — modern Milan — served as the imperial residence for the western court through much of the late fourth century, preferred over Rome for its proximity to the Alpine passes and the Rhine-Danube frontier. These solidi were struck there under Honorius's administration, yet bear Arcadius's name as part of the three-emperor college formula encoded in the AVGGG legend — a plural acknowledging simultaneous rule that had been standard since Valentinian I divided the empire with Valens in 364.

The Mediolanum mint closed around 402 when Stilicho evacuated the court to Ravenna ahead of Alaric's invasion of northern Italy.
