| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Arcadius, helmeted and pearl-diademed, clad in cuirass, with a spear held upright in the right hand behind the head and a large round shield on the left arm, the shield's surface decorated with a horseman motif. The imperial effigy is rendered in the formal late antique frontal style characteristic of Theodosian-era coinage. The obverse legend, divided by the bust, reads D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG, identifying the emperor by name with his titles of Pius Felix Augustus. The engraving reflects the increasingly hieratic and stylized portrait convention of the late fourth and early fifth centuries. |
