Anthemius was the last Western emperor with any realistic prospect of reversing the empire's collapse. A capable military administrator elevated by the Eastern court in Constantinople, he co-launched the massive joint expedition of 468 against the Vandals in North Africa — the largest Roman military operation in generations, possibly involving 100,000 men and over 1,000 ships. Its catastrophic failure off Cape Bon effectively ended any serious Roman capacity to project force in the Mediterranean.
He was murdered by his own father-in-law Ricimer in 472, the same year this issue terminates.
