Obverse description Helmeted and cuirassed imperial bust of Anastasius I in three-quarter view facing right, the emperor depicted in full military panoply holding a spear diagonally over the right shoulder with the tip extending upward. The shield, held at the left side, bears an elaborate decoration depicting a mounted horseman spearing a prostrate fallen enemy beneath the horse — a classical adventus or victory motif. The facial features are rendered in the late antique Byzantine style, with a frontal rigidity characteristic of the period. The imperial legend encircles the bust within the coin's border of dots.
