Ferdinand Charles III governed Mantua under Habsburg suzerainty during the War of the Spanish Succession, and the duchy paid dearly for it. When Imperial forces lost control of the city to the French in 1701, Ferdinand Charles hedged toward Louis XIV — a decision Vienna never forgave. The Habsburgs formally sequestered Mantua in 1708, extinguishing the Gonzaga-Nevers line's rule entirely. These copper soldi were struck in the last years before that annexation, during a city under military pressure and administrative collapse.
MIR 748 is among the final autonomous copper issues of the duchy.
