Obverse description Armored bust of Charles Emmanuel I facing right, depicted with a ruffled collar and cuirass rendered in the late Renaissance manner typical of Savoyard coinage. The effigy occupies the central field of this small billon piece, struck with bold if somewhat crude hammered dies. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading CAR.EM.D.G.DUX.SABAUD, identifying the ruler as Charles Emmanuel, Duke of Savoy by the grace of God. The legend is separated from the bust by an inner border consistent with hammered coinage of the period.
