Obverse description Central motif of a city gateway rendered within a polylobe border, the internal points of which are adorned with pellets. The gateway design, emblematic of Genoa, is enclosed by a reeded inner circle. The circumferential legend in Latin uncial script reads IANVA Q DEVS PROTEGAT, invoking divine protection over the city. The overall composition is characteristic of the hammered billon small coinage of the French-governed Genoese Republic in the late fourteenth century.
