Obverse description Central device depicts the Genoese city gate (castello), surmounted by the Visconti biscione (coiled serpent devouring a figure), the whole enclosed within a multifoil polylobe with a pellet at each interior cusp. The primary design is framed by a beaded circle, beyond which the circumferential legend runs in uncial Latin characters. The gate motif asserts Visconti lordship over Genoa, while the biscione serves as the heraldic emblem of the Duchy of Milan.
