Obverse description Central device features the crowned royal arms of France — a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis in the French heraldic arrangement — surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. The shield is rendered in a Renaissance Gothic style typical of the French royal coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. The surrounding circular legend reads in Latin, naming Charles IX as king of France by the grace of God. The coin is struck on a broad flan with a beaded border encircling the entire design.
