Obverse description Central field displays a quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of France (fleurs-de-lis) and Dauphine (with dolphin), enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The shield is surmounted by a crown and flanked by decorative elements in the Gothic tradition of late medieval French coinage. A circular Latin legend in uncial characters surrounds the central device, reading KAROLVS FRAnCORVm REX (Charles, King of the Franks). The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, characteristic of hammered billon coinage of this period.
