Reverse description A shield bearing the royal arms of Denmark — three crowned lions passant in pale upon a field semy of hearts — is displayed centrally within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend, identifying the coin as a new issue of the Malmö mint, runs along the outer periphery and terminates with a small crown device. The composition is characteristic of the late medieval Scandinavian hammered tradition, with the beaded border providing a clear demarcation between the central device and the marginal inscription.

Additional information

John I — known in Danish as Hans — struck these skillings from Malmö during a reign defined by his failed attempt to reassert Danish control over Sweden. His catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Rotebro in 1497 was followed, improbably, by a decade of actual control over the Swedish crown, only for that to collapse again after the Swedish revolt of 1501. The Malmö mint was one of his most productive, benefiting from the city's position as a major commercial hub on the Øresund.

The thirty-year span of this type makes precise dating within the issue nearly impossible without die study.
