The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown with elaborate scrollwork. The circular legend reading LVD. XIIII. D. G. FR. ET. NAV. REX with the date 1643 and mint mark A runs around the periphery, separated by a star. The overall design is rendered in a bold, high-relief style characteristic of the early reign of Louis XIV.
