The Atrebates under Commius arrived in southern Britain following Caesar's Gallic campaigns — Commius himself had served as Caesar's envoy before defecting after the failed revolts of 52 BC. The coinage of this period reflects a tribal authority asserting itself in the political vacuum left by Roman military pressure without yet Roman occupation. ABC 704 is associated specifically with the Regni cultural zone of modern Sussex and Hampshire.
These small silver units are notoriously brittle at the flan edges due to the high silver content and hammered production method, making fully intact examples genuinely uncommon.
