| 裏面の説明 | A stylised horse prances to the right in the central field, rendered in the schematic, elongated manner characteristic of late Icenic silver coinage. The body of the horse is articulated with exaggerated limbs and a curved, sweeping tail. The field above the horse is scattered with a series of oval and circular pellets arranged in an arc, imitating a celestial or decorative border. Further isolated pellets are distributed below and around the horse. A tricorne or branched symbol appears beneath the horse, serving as the type-defining motif of this issue. |

The Ecen inscription on this type is among the clearest epigraphic evidence for the Iceni tribal name in the pre-Roman period, appearing on coinage issued in the years immediately before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD effectively ended independent Iceni minting. Whether "Ecen" represents a ruler's name or the tribe itself remains debated — most current scholarship favors the tribal reading. The Iceni initially accepted client-kingdom status under Rome, a fragile arrangement that collapsed catastrophically under Prasutagus's death and the subsequent revolt of Boudicca in 60-61 AD.
