The Iceni occupied what is now Norfolk and Suffolk, and their coinage — produced in the decades immediately before the Roman invasion of 43 AD — reflects a tribe that retained considerable internal autonomy under client-king arrangements with Rome. The "Ecen" inscription on this type is among the earliest uses of a tribal name on British Celtic coinage, a political assertion that becomes pointed when you consider how little time remained before Claudius's legions made such declarations irrelevant.
