The Trinovantes occupied territory roughly corresponding to modern Essex and southern Suffolk, and by the mid-first century BC were under sustained pressure from the expanding Catuvellauni to the northwest. Caesar's two British expeditions — 55 and 54 BC — briefly disrupted tribal power structures across southeastern Britain, and the Trinovantes were among the tribes that submitted to him, seeking Roman backing against Cassivellaunus.
