Dubnovellaunos is attested as a ruler in both Kent and, later, Essex — his name appears on coins across two distinct tribal territories, and he may be the same "Dubnovellaunus" listed among British kings who sent embassies to Augustus, recorded by the emperor himself in the Res Gestae. Whether that diplomatic contact influenced the Rochester Pegasus coinage in any way remains unresolved, but the chronology overlaps.
These small silver units circulated in the densely populated Cantii heartland of modern Kent during a period of intensifying trade with the Roman world via the Thames estuary ports. The ABC 318 classification distinguishes this Rochester type from related Dubnovellaunos issues by die characteristics documented through findspot clustering.
