The Atrebates occupied a territory roughly centered on modern Berkshire and Hampshire, their political ties to the Gaulish Atrebates across the Channel remaining active well into the Caesar's British campaigns of 55–54 BC. The "cogwheel" type takes its name from the distinctive pellet-and-ring arrangement identified in finds concentrated around Danebury hillfort — a site that had largely fallen out of use as a defended settlement by this period, though it apparently retained some ritual or transactional significance.
The type is poorly represented in hoards relative to other Atrebatic silver, suggesting either a short production window or highly localized circulation.
