Aversbeschreibung Stylised abstract head facing right, rendered in the Celtic artistic tradition with a prominent crescent moon motif and a sunburst or pellet cluster on the chin area. The hair is depicted as a series of curved crescents arranged in decorative registers, conveying movement and ornamental complexity. Various pellets, crescents, and geometric symbols are scattered throughout the field, characteristic of Dobunnic silver coinage. The overall design reflects the distinctive La Tène decorative style, combining naturalistic and abstract elements within the limited flan.

Reversbeschreibung A stylised horse advancing left, distinguished by three curved tails rendered in the characteristic Celtic annulate fashion with ring-and-dot detailing. Above the horse, an animal head — likely a boar or horse head — appears alongside a radiate sun motif rendered as a wheel or starburst. Below the horse, a clearly defined cock's head with open beak is positioned facing right, serving as the type's defining diagnostic feature. A wheel or ring motif appears before the horse in the field. The overall composition is executed in a loose, expressive La Tène style typical of Dobunnic silver coinage.

Zusätzliche Informationen

The Dobunni occupied the Severn Valley and surrounding Cotswold uplands, a territory broadly corresponding to modern Gloucestershire and parts of Oxfordshire. Their coinage developed later than that of the Catuvellauni to the east, and the silver units of this period reflect a tribe still consolidating regional authority rather than projecting imperial ambition. No Dobunnic ruler's name appears on coins until sometime around the turn of the millennium — these uninscribed units predate that shift entirely.

The fabric on Dobunnic silver of this type is notoriously inconsistent, with many surviving examples struck on poorly prepared flans that are both underweight and off-center. At 0.99g this piece sits at the lower boundary of expected weight for the series.
