The Danebury Double Boar type takes its name from the Iron Age hillfort in Hampshire where significant numbers were recovered, placing its circulation squarely within the tribal heartland of the Atrebates. The decade bracketing its production coincides almost exactly with Caesar's two expeditions to Britain — 55 and 54 BC — and the subsequent political disruption that reshaped southern British tribal hierarchies and their coinage output.
The lightweight silver unit format characteristic of Belgic coinage in this period reflects fractional monetary needs rather than debasement.
