Contemporary counterfeits of Iron Age coinage occupy a genuinely ambiguous category — produced outside official tribal authority, yet circulating alongside genuine issues and accepted, evidently, at face value often enough to make the effort worthwhile. The Sussex Ducks type, associated with the Regni territory in what is now West Sussex, was itself a fractional denomination of already modest weight, which made plating over a bronze core a viable fraud with minimal material investment.
The timing places this piece squarely within the period of Caesar's British expeditions, when cross-channel trade and political disruption among the Atrebatic client kingdoms may have loosened the enforcement of monetary integrity that tribal authority would otherwise have maintained.
