Contemporary counterfeits of Epaticcus's coinage circulated during his reign over the northern Atrebates, roughly the decade or two before Claudius's invasion of 43 AD scrambled tribal currencies across southern Britain. This piece is a plated minim — a bronze core flash-silvered to pass as the real thing — produced not by the tribe but by an unknown forger working within or near Atrebatic territory. The technique is ancient and widespread, but its appearance at this denomination is notable: minims were already the smallest and least valuable units in circulation, making the economic incentive for faking them surprisingly unclear.
