背面描述 A bull depicted butting or charging to the right, rendered in the stylised, abstracted manner characteristic of late Iron Age Celtic coinage. The animal's body is conveyed through bold, schematic lines, with limbs and torso reduced to geometric forms. The Latin inscription 'VI' appears above the bull and 'CO' below, together reading as an abbreviated form of VIRICO(M) or similar, conventionally interpreted as referencing Verica, son of Commios, ruler of the Atrebates. The design fills the irregularly shaped flan with typical Celtic horror vacui, the remaining field occupied by pellets and decorative motifs.

附加信息

Verica ruled the Atrebates during one of the most politically volatile periods of pre-Roman Britain, maintaining close ties with Rome — he appears in Latin sources as "Rex" on his larger coinage, an almost unprecedented claim for a British ruler. When he was eventually driven out by a rival faction around 42–43 AD, his appeal to Emperor Claudius is cited by ancient sources as a direct pretext for the Roman invasion of 43 AD. These minims, struck in the final decades before that invasion, circulated in a kingdom already deeply entangled with Roman commercial and political networks.
