Verica ruled the Atrebates in the decades immediately before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, and his coinage — including these tiny silver minims — is among the clearest numismatic evidence of deep Roman cultural penetration into southern Britain before a single legion crossed the Channel. His father Commius had fled Caesar's Gaul as an enemy of Rome; Verica styled himself REX on his coins and likely died in Rome as a client king, possibly the very man whose appeal to Claudius provided the political justification for the conquest itself.
