Aanvullende informatie

The Silver Krugerrand arrived in 2017 as a deliberate extension of the gold coin's fifty-year run, introduced specifically for the anniversary year and then continued as an ongoing issue. The gold Krugerrand had been conceived in 1967 partly to move South African gold through retail channels during a period when bullion bars faced international resistance, and the silver version follows the same commercial logic — a sovereign wrapper for refined metal.

Unlike the gold coin, which carried legal tender status largely as a technicality, the silver issue's one-rand face value reflects the same nominal fiction. The South African Reserve Bank authorizes the denomination; nobody has ever spent one.
