Obverse description Central device comprising a large quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of Castile, Leon, Austria, and Burgundy, surmounted by an ornate crown. The shield is flanked on either side by elaborate decorative supporters. A mintmark or control letter appears below the shield in the lower field. The entire device is encircled by a beaded inner ring, with the legend reading PH`S + DEI + GRA + ARCID + AVS` + DVX + BG` + CO + HOL` running continuously around the outer border in Gothic uncial characters, identifying Philip as Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, and Count of Holland.
