Obverse description A fully armored knight stands in three-quarter view to the right, his right hand raising a sword upright against his shoulder; the date is divided on either side of his figure. At his feet rests a crowned shield bearing the lion of Gelderland. The legend encircles the design within a beaded inner border, proclaiming the authority of the issuing province. The composition is characteristic of the early type Dutch Silver Ducat series struck for the Province of Gelderland within the confederate coinage system.
