Populonia, the only Etruscan city known to have struck coins directly from its own ore — smelted from iron deposits on Elba — produced this denomination at a mint whose output we can roughly sequence but never precisely date within the century-long range assigned to the series. The blank reverse is not an error or incompletion; it was an intentional feature of early Populonian silver, a convention the city maintained long after neighboring mints had adopted two-sided designs.
The Hercle series represents Populonia's adoption of a Greco-influenced monetary idiom during a period when Etruscan political power was contracting under Roman pressure.
