The Trinovantes occupied territory roughly corresponding to modern Essex and Suffolk, and were among the first British tribes to have direct, documented contact with Rome — Caesar's second expedition in 54 BC targeted their territory specifically, and he installed Mandubracius as a client king over Roman objections to Cassivellaunus. Coinage of this fractional type likely circulated during precisely that period of political disruption, used in small-scale exchange and possibly in tribute arrangements that Caesar himself describes in *De Bello Gallico*.
