Populonia occupied a singular position among Etruscan city-states as the only one known to have struck its own coinage directly from locally smelted metal — the iron ore of Elba was processed on the mainland nearby, and the resulting wealth funded a mint active across several centuries. The Tinia series takes its name from the chief Etruscan deity, the rough equivalent of Jupiter, whose cult was central to Populonian civic identity during the period of Roman encroachment into northern Etruria.
At under two-thirds of a gram, this is among the smallest silver issues attributed to the city.
