Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian I facing right, wearing a pearl diadem with pendilia visible behind the ear. The emperor's portrait is rendered in the characteristic late Roman imperial style, with strong facial features and finely engraved drapery over the cuirass. A fibula secures the paludamentum at the right shoulder. The encircling Latin legend reads D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG, separated by a dotted border, identifying the emperor as pious and felicitous Augustus.
