| Obverse description | Right-facing bust of Emperor Valens, wearing a pearl diadem adorned with rosette ornaments, his hair elaborately styled and swept back in ridged waves. The effigy is draped in a paludamentum fastened at the shoulder with a fibula decorated with pendant elements, and cuirassed beneath. The portrait exhibits the refined late Roman engraving style characteristic of the Nicomedia mint, with finely rendered facial features and strong jaw. The encircling legend D N VALEN-S P F AVG reads from left to right around the obverse field. |
