Jovinus was proclaimed emperor at Mogontiacum (Mainz) in 411 with the backing of Burgundian and Alanic federates, making his coinage an artifact of barbarian power brokerage as much as Roman minting practice. His brother Sebastianus was elevated to co-emperor shortly after, which accounts for the plural AVGG in the legend. The regime collapsed when Ataulf, the Visigothic king, switched his support to Honorius — Jovinus and Sebastianus were both executed in 413, their heads sent to Ravenna.
Treveri (Trier) was by then a mint operating under precarious circumstances, having changed hands repeatedly in the preceding decade.
